As partner for this 70 lawyer Connecticut trial firm, Mr. AppelmanI tried and litigated many of the firm’s most challenging cases. His principal areas of practice included: products liability, commercial litigation, first-party insurance/bad faith; commercial foreclosure and lender liability; and ERISA. He served as Chairman of the Defense Counsel Committee for Connecticut’s lead paint cases (1996-1999).
Representative Cases:

  • Successfully represented a national insurer in an antitrust injunction trial alleging statewide conspiracy to restrain trade in the pharmaceuticals industry.
  • Successfully represented a national insurer in a contested Federal Racketeering action involving interstate bank fraud committed by general agent and co-conspirators. (Responsibility for case handling and more than 50 depositions.)
  • Successfully resolved a multi-plaintiff products liability action against an aircraft manufacturer arising out of the in-flight breakup of a general aviation craft.
  • (Involved coordination for investigation by expert team with case settling during deposition of plaintiff’s lead expert.)
  • Successfully prosecuted a large scale plaintiff’s products liability action against an international chemical manufacturer.
  • Successfully represented an international automobile manufacturer in a products liability action involving brain injury arising out of an ATV accident and more than 30 depositions resulting in proof of fraudulent claim by scientific evidence.
  • Successfully represented an international chemical manufacturer in a products liability action involving comprehensive burn injuries arising out of an oil drum explosion.
  • Successfully represented a national insurance company in a contested first party property insurance bad faith case involving defenses based upon fraud.
  • Obtained a defense verdict for a local health club in a jury trial of premises liability claim for injuries resulting in quadriplegia.
  • Successfully represented a national insurer in a challenge to State of Connecticut rate setting for state hospitals through appeal to Connecticut Supreme Court.
  • Obtained a defense judgment against and individual representing a national insurer in a rescission claim based upon concealed medical evidence against individual claiming disability arising from HIV positive condition (opposed by Yale Law School AIDS and Poverty Clinic.)
  • Obtained a defense judgment representing a national insurer in defense of a life insurance claim under ERISA.
  • Obtained a summary judgment representing a national insurer (co-counsel) on the first of twenty eight sites on environmental coverage claims brought by an international tire manufacturer, leading to a comprehensive settlement.
  • Obtained a summary judgment for an international manufacturer of commercial products liability claims.
